0 Music Page Redesign
One of the ongoing struggles we have here at the flowerhouse is attempting to add new features to the site within the framework of wordpress’ convenient, but rigid, open source software.
As such, we have started to move our site to a new host giving us the flexibility needed to make improvements to the site. Stay tuned for more on that front.

In the meantime, I wanted to draw your attention to the new Music page listed in the site’s header bar. Clicking on this will give you access to every audio file we have uploaded over the last two years including podcasts, “best of”, and playlist specials. You will also be able to view the post’s playlist and artwork from here as well.

A word of warning though, the one drawback to the page redesign has been longer than normal load times! That said, we are aware of the issue and will continue to seek out ways to make your experience on the site a better one.

0 AC Newman is back
I’ve been sitting on this track for the last few weeks and just felt compelled to blow it up for those of you who may have missed its release. (ed note: my students are already getting sick of this song given that I’ve been playing it so much) Canadian AC Newman first came to my attention back in 2o04 with his song, On the Table – a track that still pops up on my ipod just about everyday. Since then, I’ve stayed up on his catalog but, if I’m being honest, I just haven’t found a song that matched that song’s catchy, upbeat vibe. That is until now.
Encyclopedia of Classic Takedowns is one of the top five songs I’ve heard this year, which is saying something given that we’ve featured bands such as Floating Action, The Heavy, Metronomy and AlunaGeorge. Equally boppy and incredibly addicting, ECT is a song that literally forces you to tap your toes, shake your shoulders, and snap your fingers. Give a listen (or 10!) and see for yourself.

0 Midwest Vibe
Isn’t it funny how you never truly appreciate something until it’s missing or absent from your life? Well, for me, that something is the Midwest. I forget how refreshing the brisk fall air can be, how dramatic the leaf-coloration schemes are, and the amount of character that’s associated with quaint, old homes from the mining days. Enjoy where you live, and celebrate where you came from.

0 Yearning
10 years ago or so, my mother headed into the desert and never came back. I used to think that it had something to do with wanting to escape the Bay Area masses that, try as she might, she just never quite fit in with. A high school graduate from a small farm in Hawaii, she certainly didn’t work in tech and, try as she might, was never quite able to accumulate that 7 figure retirement account that seemed to grow on trees during the bubble. My mother was a round peg in a city that was seemingly trying to do away with pegs altogether. San Francisco 3.0 – 2002 vintage.
I was happy for her when she made the move because I knew that she was searching for something. Something that urban life and the silicon valley would never be able to give her. Yet, I never quite understood her draw to the desert until I was bitten by the bug myself.
Having made several trips to Death Valley, Joshua Tree, and many other locales over the years, I can tell you that the desert is magical in a way that defies magical. There is no slight of hand, no mirrored illusions, no card tricks. No rabbits or doves. No din of coins dropping or two drink minimums. For me, the desert is the ultimate set for the movie that I wish my life could’ve been. A backdrop that represents independence, resistance, nature and self-sufficiency…my soul’s own USB plug.
Being out here again reminds me what longing means and why it is important. It reminds me that there are places close to home that still tease and allure. Yes, I love SE Asia and will undoubtedly end up there in the very near future. Still, I wish that every one of you could’ve been on that boulder with me last night as I watched the joshua trees reach up and pop the day’s sun. Darkness settling around me, I was struck by just how contented and “full” I felt.
I woke up early this morning and hiked out to a few bouldering spots that I will return to when the sun rises a bit higher. During the walk in, I was listening to music, carrying my crash pad and smiling. In some similar way, I hope your morning was the same.

0 Large New Music Post
Ah, fall break…year two.
Although I wish we could say that we were jetting off to the far reaches of the world for fall break, the truth is that this week is all about recharging and catching up on some loose ends that we’ve unfortunately let linger. One of those would undoubtedly be the podcast yes but, in our defense, we have at least been posting music. That’s something, no?
With Brandon braving the early Nordak winter and I on my way to Joshua Tree, visions of posting a few catch up podcasts seems highly unlikely. Still, fear not fhouse fans as I will not leave you hanging.
I’ve dug into my recent downloads folder and, together with a couple of older gems, have put together a lengthy playlist to hold you over until you can get your next podcast fix. As usual, there is a wide variety of tracks here with something to satisfy most tastes – indiepop, folk, nusoul, covers, upbeat, and mellow too. And because some of you have asked, unfortunately our host doesn’t allow us to post .zip files which I know would have made downloading these tracks much easier. Sry.
Enjoy and thank you for listening.
